This project concerns the design and manufacture of a system that will cause composite wing trimmings to be delaminated.  This will be done by use of a ram to cause a three point bend, similar to a press brake.  Testing has determined that certain levels of deflection can cause significant delamination in composite boards.

For this project the method of delivering motion to the ram must be determined.  The end result will be a ram delivering periodic linear motion driven from a motor.

The primary requirement of this system is to cause at least 50% of the composite layers to be delaminated.  This will be tested by simply counting the layers.

This project will be optimized to reduce energy losses from friction in the mechanical drive between the motor and the ram.

Testing for the forces of delamination was done on a hydraulic press with high strength and stiffness, being manually controlled by the user.  Maintaining a high level of strength and stiffness will be difficult for this device if it is to be used in an economical production environment.
